University Life Insights -Aoyama Gakuin University Freshmen Interview-

Chinatsu Aoyama

As the first semester draws to a close, numerous freshmen have navigated a blend of enjoyable events and challenges. Presenting here are the insights from three freshman students from three different departments, each offering valuable perspectives on their first half of their first year in college.

Student ①: College of Literature / Department of English

Student ②: College of Literature / Department of Comparative Arts

Student ③: Faculty of Law / Department of Law

Q1. What was the most interesting class you took in the first semester?

A1.

① The most fascinating class I took in the first semester was British Literature History. Learning about the lives and works of various authors was truly enjoyable. It made me want to delve into their works with a better understanding of their backgrounds.

② The most intriguing class was Introduction to Comparative Art Studies A.

③ Introduction to Comparative Law A was the best of all the classes during the semester.

Q2. How does high school differ from college in terms of academics and other activities?

A2.

① In terms of academics, I found that while the format of classes varies, much of the learning relies on self-initiative. Integrated English (IE) felt student-driven, requiring us to seek out themes ourselves. On the other hand, lectures felt mostly one-sided, demanding active listening and discernment. In both cases, it became clear that simply receiving knowledge from the teacher isn't sufficient.

② Unlike high school, college lets you choose what you want to learn, which is enjoyable. However, it requires self-managing your schedule, making it challenging to strike a balance between productivity and leisure. Also, with more people, remembering names becomes a struggle.

③ In terms of academics, in high school, I could ask various people, like parents or tutors, but in college, I can only ask professors. In terms of other activities, in high school club activities, advisors decided everything, while in college, we collectively decide on activities.

Q3. What do you think is great about attending Aoyama Gakuin University?

A3.

① The presence of foreign professors is a standout feature. With small class sizes, I found more opportunities to converse in English. The professors' attention feels well-distributed among students. Additionally, the students are vibrant and full of energy.

② The location is fantastic! Exploring lunch spots is a delightful experience.

③ Convenient access, making it easy to work part-time even around stations other than Shibuya. Also, there are many places to go for leisure.

Q4. How do you spend your time outside of classes? (Part-time job, leisure, study, clubs, etc.)

A4.

① I enjoy jogging on holidays since I love running. I'm also a member of the track and field club. Apart from that, I work on assignments.

② Before classes, I do part-time work and hang out with friends. I overdid the part-time work in the first semester, so I want to plan it better for the second semester.

③ Doing part-time jobs, clubs, and extracurricular activities.

Q5. What is your second foreign language? Why did you choose that language?

A5.

① Spanish. I heard it's close to English in pronunciation, which influenced my choice. Also, since it's widely spoken worldwide, I thought it would be useful.

② Spanish. I picked it because of my interest in soccer and my love for Spanish art. Also, it seemed approachable being similar to English. On reflection, learning a language from scratch is challenging, but it’s fascinating to explore another culture.

③ Spanish. I heard it’s widely spoken after English and considered it the most practical choice.

Q6. Do you have any comments as you head into the second semester?

A6.

① Having grasped university life a bit more comfortably in the first semester, I aim to dedicate myself more to studies. I want to read the books from British Literature History and write longer English passages to solidify my knowledge. Additionally, I'll prioritize maintaining good health to attend every class.

② For the upcoming semester, I aim to study more effectively.

③ Aim to score well on reports and assignments!
