Are Aoyama Gakuin University students really fashionable?

“Aoyama Gakuin University students are fashionable;” everyone has heard this saying at least once. Many freshmen have worried about what clothes to wear when they first passed through the gates of AGU. This article takes a look into which brands are popular among AGU students and how much money they spend.

The format of the survey was as follows: students were asked about their academic department in order to establish background information. From there, they were asked questions about their everyday clothes. They were asked 8 questions in total, including which brands they buy their clothes from, the frequency at which they buy clothes, the way they shop, the average price range of their clothings, and what matters when choosing clothes to buy. Ultimately, about 200 AGU students provided answers.

Results of the Survey

Figure 1 shows AGU students’ top 5 brands ranked by popularity. About 50% of the total answered that they buy their clothes from UNIQLO and GU. Another 25% of the total answered that they get their clothes at ZARA and H&M. In addition, there are about 10% of people who answered that they buy their clothes from LOWRYS FARM or POLO Ralph Lauren.

Figure 2 shows the price-range of clothes bought by AGU students. About 40% of the total responded that they purchase ¥1000 to ¥5000 clothes. Another 47% of respondents stated that they buy clothes in the ¥5000 to ¥10000 range.  Examining the data, it can be seen that more than 90% of people purchase clothes that cost less than ¥10000. On the contrary, there are only 2% of people who purchase clothes for more than ¥30000.

Figure 3 shows the data collected on who pays for the students’ clothes. The percentage of people who pay for their own clothes accounts for more than 80%. There are also about 44% of people whose parents pay for their clothes. This means that most of the time AGU students purchase clothing themselves, but sometimes their parents will pay.

Figure 4 details where people buy clothes, be it in person, online, or a combination therein. About 50% of people answered that they buy clothes both in person and online. The second most common way is exclusively in person.

The last question was about what students keep in their minds when purchasing clothes. Among the answers, some of the most important aspects were whether or not the clothing can be styled in multiple ways, how long it lasts, the sizing, the design, and the comfort.

Conclusion

According to these results, it appears AGU students buy moderately fashionable clothes at a reasonable price. AGU student's favorite brands match these price-ranges too. In the editorial meeting of EIZY, it was thought that there is a correlation between student’s income and price-range of their clothes. However, this assumption proved to be incorrect. Another possible pattern that was hypothesized was a possible connection between a student's academic department and their favorite brands. However, this connection once again proved to be false. This survey hopefully provides some interesting insight into the fashion trends to the readers.
